The Great Pretenders is the second studio album, and sixth release overall, by the post-punk band Hop-Scotch. Produced by dance music producers Mark Liggett and Chris Barbosa of Shannon ("Let the Music Play") fame, this album was a success worldwide. The initial 1981 Great Pretenders came in versions sung in English and Oceana, as well as a limited "Edición Española" release, featuring only Spanish lyrics. The final mixing and mastering was done at Sterling Sound in New York City with DJ François Kevorkian and George Marino.

The Oceana version is now a rarity, as only 10,000 copies were issued. Interestingly, it is their shortest album by only 7 seconds (Voodoo Monkey was 29:51 in length).
