In Lovia, prior to 2010, a free function was a political or administrative office that could be taken up voluntarily by a Lovian citizen, without requiring election or appointment. One could become chairperson of a neighborhood or hamlet and mayor of a town or city this way. In case of double or triple candidates for the free function, minor elections could be held.

The free functions were abolished in the 2010 State Reform, proposed by King Dimitri I. They were considered undemocratic and could lead to power abuse within a city or town. Since the reform, there are no more mayors and chairmen in Lovia. Their duties have shifted to the state level and are now with the Governor, who is elected democratically in state elections.
